Job Description

Overview of the position:

Brook Street is looking to recruit candidates just like you to provide Operational Support (OSG) for prisons across East Anglia. This is a long-term temporary role with the option to become directly employed following your successful performance.

You'll be in a unique working environment with a strong sense of team working, so we're looking for people who work well as part of a group. Positions like this are always in demand, so you'll benefit from a choice of long-term contracts in the future. There is also potential after you've completed your training for you to work in other prisons both locally and nationally. This is an ideal role if you're looking for long term work in the Public Sector.

Details of the position:

Your work will be based on a shift pattern of 37 or 39 hours a week.

This could involve early, late and weekend shifts. You will be paid an hourly rate of £11.75/hour with the option of overtime once you've completed your training.

Purpose of the OSG role:
As part of the security team you will be responsible for assisting in the safety and security of the establishment. Your duties will include escorting visitors and building contractors, gate duties within the prison and in outside areas. You will ensure the safety and security of the visitors, staff and prisoners within the Prison establishment, while persons from outside of NOMS are on site. You will also ensure that no unauthorised persons or items enter the establishment.

OSG Duties:

Your duties will be varied, and you'll be assisting in upholding the safety and security of the prison.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring the safety and security of visitors. This will include checking & searching visitors as well as supervising them. You will also be escorting and contractors and vehicles when they are onsite, and checking their tools.
  • Radio handling and operation in order to help communicate with your team. You'll also work in the Emergency Control Room (ECR) and Communications Room.
  • Stores, switchboard, canteen and kit exchange duties.
  • Patrolling Perimeter and grounds, and night patrol duties.
  • Routine administrative work
  • Searching buildings and prisoners property, as well as conducting rub down searches of prisoners
  • Health & Safety Procedures
  • Supervising small selected prisoner work parties

You don't need formal qualifications or previous experience to apply for this role.

The nature of the OSG role requires you to be security conscious and able to challenge potential compromises and risks. You will also need to be reliable and consistent, level headed and have exceptional interpersonal skills. Successful applicants will have a background in customer services or security, and will be assessed based on the following competencies:

  • Developing self and others.

Full training is provided by the establishment/ department which you will be fully paid for.

Security Clearance required:
All applicants will be subject to the HM Prison Service Security Clearance procedure which takes on average 3-5 weeks. You must hold a Valid Passport or Birth Certificate & ideally a Photo Driving Licence in your current address. All applicants must be able to provide details of 2 satisfactory references, at least one from an ex-employer.
