Job Description

Job Title: 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant – Sensory Processing Needs

Location: Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire
Start Date: September 2025
Salary: £85 - £100 per day (based on experience)
Contract: Full-Time, Term Time Only | Temp to Perm Potential

The Opportunity:

We are seeking a caring, proactive, and enthusiastic SEN Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a child in Key Stage 2 with sensory processing difficulties. This full-time role begins in September 2025 and is ideal for someone passionate about inclusive education with an understanding of how sensory needs affect learning and behaviour.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a forward-thinking and inclusive primary school in Hemel Hempstead, where pupils are supported to thrive both academically and emotionally.

Your Role:

As a 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting a pupil’s daily school experience. The child may struggle with sensory input, transitions, focus, and emotional regulation. You’ll offer calm, structured, and personalised support throughout the day.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the child with transitions, engagement, and regulation throughout the school day
  • Implement sensory strategies and calming techniques
  • Adapt classroom resources to meet the child’s sensory needs
  • Collaborate with teachers, SENDCo, and external professionals
  • Foster a safe and structured environment during class and unstructured times (break/lunch)
  • Use visual supports and sensory tools to reduce anxiety and aid communication
  • Keep clear and consistent records of the child’s progress and development

About the School:

The school is a welcoming and inclusive primary setting in Hemel Hempstead, known for its nurturing ethos and commitment to every child’s well-being. Staff work collaboratively to create a stimulating learning environment that supports academic, social, and emotional growth.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Experience supporting children in schools or SEN settings
  • Awareness or training in sensory processing needs (or willingness to learn)
  • A calm, empathetic, and consistent approach
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • A flexible mindset and commitment to child-centred support
  • A relevant qualification (e.g. Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant) is preferred

Key Details:

  • Full-time (Monday to Friday), term time only
  • Hours: 8:30am – 3:30pm
  • Daily rate: £85 – £100 (depending on experience)
  • Temp-to-perm pathway available
  • Enhanced DBS clearance required (or willingness to obtain one)
