Job Description

Civil Engineer / Senior Civil Engineer – Highways & Drainage
Derby | Competitive Salary + Benefits
The Opportunity
A well-established and growing civil and structural engineering consultancy is looking to appoint a Civil Engineer or Senior Civil Engineer to join their Derby team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with experience across highways and drainage to work on a varied portfolio of development and infrastructure projects, taking increasing responsibility for design, project delivery and client relationships.
The role offers the opportunity to work across the full project lifecycle, from initial concepts and feasibility through to detailed design and construction.

The Role
You’ll be involved in delivering civil engineering solutions across a range of projects, with responsibilities covering both highway and drainage design.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

- Producing detailed highway and drainage designs
- Developing drainage strategies for development projects
- Designing surface water and foul drainage systems
- Designing SuDS, attenuation and associated infrastructure
- Preparing highway layouts, access arrangements and infrastructure designs
- Producing technical drawings, calculations and specifications
- Working with relevant UK highway and drainage standards
- Supporting planning and technical approval processes
- Liaising with clients, local authorities, contractors and other consultants
- Assisting with project management and coordinating design deliverables
- Reviewing designs and providing technical support to junior engineers
- Taking responsibility for your own projects and workload, depending on experience

About You

We’re looking for either a Civil Engineer or Senior Civil Engineer with consultancy experience and a background in highways and drainage.

You should have:

- A degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
- Experience working within a civil engineering consultancy
- Practical experience in highway and/or drainage design
- Knowledge of development infrastructure and associated design requirements
- Understanding of SuDS, surface water and foul drainage
- Experience using relevant engineering design software
- Good knowledge of UK standards and regulations
- Strong technical, organisational and communication skills
- The ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

For Senior-level applicants, experience managing projects, liaising directly with clients and mentoring junior engineers would be beneficial.
Chartered or working towards ICE/CEng status would also be advantageous.

Why Join?

This is an opportunity to join an established consultancy where you can work across a varied project portfolio rather than being restricted to one discipline or project type.
You’ll gain exposure to both highways and drainage, work alongside experienced engineers and have the opportunity to take greater ownership of projects as your career develops.

The position would suit an engineer looking for a technically varied role in Derby, whether you're looking to consolidate your experience at Civil Engineer level or take the next step into a Senior position.
