Salary: Grade 6 £33,951 pro- rata £17.41
Location: London
Type: Temporary 3 months
Flexible working arrangements will be considered

Overview of the Role

Are you a creative communicator with a passion for higher education? Do you enjoy developing campaigns that meet the needs of diverse audiences? Can you help shape how students engage with life at one of the UK's leading universities?
We are seeking a Student Communications Officer to support the delivery of high-impact communications to a diverse student community of more than 40,000 students from over 140 countries. The role involves developing creative campaigns that inform, engage and inspire students across a range of communication channels.
Working within the Student Communications team, you will collaborate closely with colleagues across the University to enhance the student experience and support the University's strategic objectives.
You will bring excellent writing and editing skills, a creative eye for engaging content, and a strong understanding of how tone of voice should be adapted for different audiences and channels. You will be able to work independently and collaboratively, demonstrate flexibility in your approach, and understand the communications challenges faced by a large and complex university environment.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the Student Communications and Engagement Manager in delivering communications that enhance student engagement throughout the student lifecycle, from welcome through to graduation.
  • Create engaging content for a diverse student audience across multiple channels, including web, email, social media and the University app.
  • Research, write and edit clear, compelling copy for a range of communications, including simplifying complex information to make it accessible and engaging.
  • Use initiative to resolve routine issues, prioritise workloads effectively, and seek additional information where required.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues at all levels, translating their requirements into effective communications activity where appropriate.
  • Assist with the monitoring and evaluation of communication activities, including the development and facilitation of evaluation methods such as focus groups.
  • Provide support to the wider Student Communications team as required.

These responsibilities provide an overview of the role and should not be regarded as an exhaustive list. Other reasonable duties may be required, consistent with the grade of the post.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential

  • A positive and proactive approach, with the ability to build effective relationships with colleagues at all levels and understand their needs.
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong storytelling, writing and editing skills, with the ability to communicate complex information clearly and engagingly using an appropriate tone of voice.
  • Understanding of a range of communications platforms and channel-specific best practice, including websites, email communications and social media.
  • Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to work accurately and methodically, and to evaluate data and feedback to inform future communications activity.

Desirable

  • Experience of working within a professional communications team in a large and/or complex organisation.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, including PowerPoint, SharePoint and Teams, or equivalent platforms.
  • Understanding of the higher education sector and the challenges faced by different student groups.
  • Experience of video production and editing.
  • Experience of design, or the ability to commission and work effectively with external design suppliers.
