Job Description

Intermediate Mechanical Engineer | London | Hybrid Working | Building Services Consultancy

Salary: £38,000 - £50,000 + Bonus + Private Healthcare + Flexible Working

Are you a Mechanical Building Services Engineer looking to accelerate your career within a growing consultancy where you'll gain exposure to major projects, direct mentorship from experienced engineers and genuine long-term progression opportunities?

This is an exciting opportunity to join a design-led building services consultancy that combines technical engineering excellence with practical project delivery experience and commercial understanding.

Working across a diverse portfolio of projects, you will become part of a collaborative team delivering innovative engineering solutions across commercial, healthcare, residential, education and mixed-use developments.

Unlike many larger consultancies where engineers can become siloed within specific project stages, this role offers broad exposure across the full project lifecycle, providing an excellent platform for professional development and future progression.

The Opportunity

This position is ideally suited to an engineer with 2-4 years' building services consultancy experience who is looking to take the next step in their career.

You will work closely with senior engineers and directors, assisting with the delivery of projects from concept through to completion whilst continuing to develop your technical and client-facing skills.

Projects typically include:

- Commercial offices
- Workplace fit-outs
- Healthcare facilities
- Higher education projects
- Student accommodation
- Residential developments
- Mixed-use schemes
- Specialist technical environments

This role offers a rare opportunity to gain experience beyond pure design work, developing a wider understanding of project delivery, coordination and client requirements.

Why This Role Stands Out

Many engineers at this level are seeking greater responsibility but often find progression limited within larger organisations.

Here, you'll have the opportunity to become involved in:

- Mechanical design and calculations
- Site visits and surveys
- Design coordination meetings
- Client and stakeholder interaction
- Technical reporting
- Project delivery support
- Construction-stage activities
- Multidisciplinary collaboration

You'll work alongside experienced engineers who are invested in supporting your development, giving you the exposure and mentorship needed to continue progressing towards Senior Engineer level.

The Role

As an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer, you will support the delivery of mechanical building services designs across a variety of projects while developing your technical capabilities and project experience.

Key Responsibilities

- Assist in the design and delivery of mechanical building services projects.
- Produce design calculations, reports, specifications and technical documentation.
- Support the preparation of drawings and engineering designs.
- Undertake HVAC, ventilation, heating and cooling system calculations.
- Coordinate designs with electrical, public health, architectural and structural disciplines.
- Attend client meetings, design reviews and project workshops.
- Carry out site visits, surveys and inspections.
- Support project delivery from concept through to completion.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant regulations, standards and best practice.
- Assist senior engineers with technical problem-solving and project coordination.
- Contribute to maintaining high-quality technical standards across all projects.

What We're Looking For

Essential

- Degree qualified in Mechanical Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.
- 2-4 years' experience within a Building Services Consultancy environment.
- Experience assisting in the delivery of mechanical building services projects.
- Understanding of HVAC, ventilation, heating and cooling systems.
- Strong technical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Desirable

- Experience using IES VE or similar building performance modelling software.
- Working knowledge of Revit and AutoCAD.
- Exposure to commercial office, residential or healthcare projects.
- Membership of CIBSE, IMechE or similar professional institution.
- An interest in progressing towards Chartership.
- Awareness of sustainability and low-carbon building design principles.
- Previous experience attending site visits and client meetings.

Career Development & Progression

This consultancy places significant emphasis on professional development and actively supports engineers who are ambitious about progressing their careers.

You will benefit from:

- Direct mentorship from experienced Chartered Engineers.
- Exposure to technically challenging projects across multiple sectors.
- Involvement in all stages of project delivery.
- Support towards professional accreditation and Chartership.
- Increased responsibility as your experience develops.
- A clear pathway towards Senior Engineer level.
- Regular exposure to clients, contractors and multidisciplinary design teams.

For engineers looking to fast-track their development whilst working within a supportive environment, this represents an excellent opportunity.

Company Culture

The business has created a collaborative and supportive working environment where engineers are encouraged to take ownership of their work whilst learning from experienced and approachable senior professionals.

With a relatively lean structure, everyone has visibility across projects and opportunities to contribute beyond their immediate responsibilities.

The culture promotes:

- Collaboration and teamwork
- Technical excellence
- Continuous development
- Professional trust and autonomy
- Knowledge sharing
- Open communication
- Long-term career growth

This is an environment where your contribution is recognised and where you can play an active role in both project delivery and your own professional development.

Package & Benefits

- £38,000 - £50,000 salary depending on experience
- Annual discretionary bonus
- Private healthcare
- Pension contribution
- 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
- Hybrid working arrangement
- Central London office location
- Chartership support
- Ongoing professional development
- Clear progression opportunities

Location & Working Pattern: Central London | Hybrid Working

The role offers a mixture of office, home and project-based working. Employees typically spend several days per week in the office, alongside attendance at client meetings and project sites as required.

Interested?

This opportunity is ideal for a Mechanical Building Services Engineer with 2-4 years' consultancy experience who is looking to develop their technical expertise, work on prestigious projects and join a consultancy where progression is based on ability and contribution rather than hierarchy.

If you're looking for a role that offers genuine development, varied project exposure and the opportunity to build your career within a growing consultancy, we'd be keen to hear from you.
