| Senior / Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Building Services) Location: Southampton Area Salary: £50,000 - £70,000 The Company An established sustainability and building services design consultancy based in the Southampton area, is looking to appoint an experienced Senior / Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to support its continued growth. They provide mechanical building services engineering, energy management and sustainability consultancy services across a range of sectors and project types. Working with end users, construction professionals and installing contractors, the consultancy delivers engineering solutions for new-build construction, building refurbishment, plant replacement and energy efficiency projects. Their approach combines technical building services expertise with a focus on energy efficiency, system optimisation and effective building operation. The business supports clients with solutions designed to reduce energy consumption, carbon emissions and energy costs. Alongside mechanical building services design, its services include energy audits, net zero carbon strategies, carbon reporting, utility management, condition surveys and technical investigations. The Role An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior / Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing building services consultancy in Southampton. This position is suited to an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer who can take ownership of mechanical building services design and contribute to the successful delivery of projects across different sectors. You will work on a variety of client-side and contractor-led design and build projects, taking responsibility for mechanical design activities from initial concept and feasibility through to detailed design and the production of technical documentation. The role includes opportunities to contribute to technical solutions, support project delivery and work across a broad range of building services systems. Responsibilities will be tailored to your experience and level of seniority. Key Responsibilities - Lead and undertake mechanical building services design across a range of projects. - Take ownership of mechanical design activities from concept and feasibility through to detailed design and technical documentation. - Carry out site surveys, investigations and technical assessments. - Design and develop low-temperature hot water heating systems. - Design domestic hot and cold water services. - Design mechanical and natural ventilation systems. - Design refrigerant and chilled water cooling systems. - Develop solutions incorporating low and zero-carbon technologies. - Undertake above-ground drainage design. - Produce technical design drawings using AutoCAD. - Prepare design specifications, performance specifications, equipment schedules and technical submissions. - Undertake design calculations using relevant industry software packages. - Contribute to project management and contract administration. - Lead or support condition surveys, feasibility studies and technical investigations. - Work collaboratively with clients, contractors and wider project teams to support effective project delivery. - Contribute to the technical quality and development of the consultancy's mechanical design services. Candidate Requirements You should demonstrate: - Strong experience in mechanical building services design. - The ability to undertake mechanical designs autonomously. - Experience delivering design work from concept and feasibility through to detailed design. - Strong technical knowledge across mechanical building services systems, including heating, ventilation, cooling and domestic water services. - Competency in AutoCAD (essential). - Experience producing technical specifications, equipment schedules and design documentation. - Experience undertaking design calculations using relevant industry software. - Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality technical work. - The ability to work effectively with clients, contractors and wider design teams. - Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office. - A full UK driving licence (essential).
